How to read a gemstone listing

Carat is weight, not size

One carat equals 0.2 grams. Because gemstones differ in density, two stones of the same carat weight can look noticeably different in size, so check the dimensions and the shape as well as the weight.

Shape and cut are different things

Shape is the outline of the stone, such as oval, round or cushion. Cut describes how the stone is faceted and finished, which affects how it handles light.

Treatments

Many natural gemstones are enhanced, most commonly by heat, to improve colour or clarity. What matters is that any treatment is identified. Use the treatment filter to compare stones on this basis.

Certificates

A laboratory certificate is an independent report on a stone’s identity and, where the laboratory states it, its origin and treatment. A listing shows the certificate agency and number only when they have been recorded for that stone.
